During my time at Google, I have worked on enterprise products used by internal Google employees. Due to this, I am unable to actually show any of the work I’ve done (NDA).

I have worked in two main areas:

  1. A product used by multiple personas such as Resource Managers to order, manage, monitor, and optimize internal resources utilized by their product areas (Resource Symphony).

  2. A tool used by Technicians at Google Data Centers, to manage work orders for maintenance and repair (CRUX).

Resource Symphony:

Resource Symphony was an undertaking to streamline and consolidate internal finance and resource management tools used by Executives, Resource Managers, and other internal personas. It covers a broad range of user journeys, from finance and forecasting, to efficiency and utilization.

This application has since grown into an extensive product, which offers users a means to order, manage, and monitor their resources, resulting in an integral part of their workflow that enables product areas within Google to run more efficiently.

I was part of a bigger team of Product Designers that supported all the aspects of this product. We were each responsible for multiple workflows, for which we conducted user research, worked closely with cross functional partners, and created designs for implementation.
We were able to contribute heavily to the overall vision and direction of the application, which was an amazing experience.

My Contributions:

  • User research to understand needs and requirements.

  • Brainstorming and whiteboard sessions with partners to explore product and design direction.

  • Conducting and contributing to design thinking workshops for various parts of the tool.

  • Wireframing and iterating, based on feedback received throughout the design process.

  • Creating mockups for implementation.

  • Working with the design team to define and contribute to the design system utilized for this product.

  • Working closely with the engineering team through implementation of the designs.

  • Talking to users and stakeholders after launches to gauge product success and adoption.

CRUX:
The purpose of CRUX was to create an application to replace a 3rd party tool in use by technicians to track maintenance work orders on the various assets and locations at the data centers.

This truly was a great project to work on. Partnering with an incredible UX researcher (Bella Chu), I was given a very thorough and well researched design brief.

My Process:

  • Based on user interviews conducted by Bella, we sat together and created some critical user journeys to help us navigate the requirements for the product.

  • I worked closely with the engineering team and stakeholders to define a clear-cut direction.

  • Using valuable information gathered in past design thinking workshops, I was able to sketch out UI options for the application, as well as a site flow and user path through the app.

  • After getting feedback on these, I then created wireframes and was able to get even more valuable insights. But we all knew this wasn’t enough. So a design validation workshop was conducted in one of the data centers, to ensure that the original problem was being solved and the users were happy. This also doubled as some usability testing.

  • After the workshop, further changes were made to the designs in accordance with workshop learnings, and then the designs were handed off to dev.

  • In the weeks following this, I worked closely with the engineering team to answer all their questions, clear out ambiguity in designs, and create more wireframes when needed. I also took some time out to mark up the red lines in the mocks.

  • After developers finished work on certain pages, I conducted a “design audit” on these to ensure they stayed true to the designs.

  • Throughout this process, Bella also conducted multiple sessions of testing to gather user feedback. This allowed us to pivot in the designs where necessary, and make changes if something wasn’t working.
